FAQ

Find answers about eTuning for Android, iPhone and Windows, the motor license, Shimano STEPS compatibility and the available configuration methods.

License and purchase

eTuning uses a license for the motor. The license is linked to the motor serial number, not to one specific phone or computer.

With the same license, you can use eTuning with that motor on Android, iPhone and Windows.

No. The license for the motor is a one-time payment and does not expire. Once activated, it remains permanently linked to that motor.

The license for the motor costs 29.99 € + VAT. It is a one-time payment, with no subscriptions or renewals.

Connect eTuning to your bike from Android, iPhone or Windows. When the app detects the motor and you need a paid function, it takes you to the checkout page with the motor serial number already included.

The serial number should not be typed manually when buying from the app, which helps avoid mistakes.

Yes. The license is linked to the motor. When you connect the same motor from Android, iPhone or Windows, eTuning recognizes the license and shows the functions available for that bike.

Current compatibility

Yes. The current eTuning platform includes an Android app, an iPhone app and eTuning for Windows. The eTuning 2026 compatibility update explains what changed compared with older workflows.

The connection method depends on the motor and the function you want to use: Bluetooth from mobile on compatible motors, or eTuning for Windows with the Shimano SM-PCE02 interface when an interface connection is required.

eTuning is compatible with these Shimano STEPS families and models:

  • EP801 / EP801-RS / EP801-CRG
  • EP6 / EP600 / EP6-RS / EP6-CRG
  • EP5 / EP500
  • EP800 / EP8 / EP800-RS
  • EP800-CRG
  • E8000 / E8080
  • E7000 / E6100 / E6110 / E6180
  • E6100-CRG
  • E6000 / E6010
  • E5000 / E5080 / E5080-H

Available functions and connection method can change by motor. For speed settings, select your model in the compatibility checker on the home page or connect the bike with the eTuning app.

For speed changes, these newer motors are configured with eTuning for Windows and the Shimano SM-PCE02 interface.

This refers to speed settings. Other eTuning functions, such as certain advanced assistance settings, are separate from the speed derestriction process.

No. For speed changes, EP800 / EP8 can be configured from Android or iPhone by Bluetooth, and also from eTuning for Windows with the Shimano SM-PCE02 interface. If your motor is EP8 / EP800, see the specific Shimano EP8 / EP800 guide.

The EP801, EP6/EP600 and EP5/EP500 families use eTuning for Windows with SM-PCE02 for speed changes.

No. If a compatible older Shimano STEPS motor needs preparation to increase speed, eTuning handles it from the Android or iPhone app.

You do not need to do a manual downgrade with E-TUBE, use an old Android phone, manually access DATA folders or follow complicated external processes.

Use the speed compatibility checker on the home page or connect the bike with the current eTuning app. The app detects the motor and shows the functions available for that bike.

Speed and configuration

Yes, when the motor and connection method allow it. eTuning can apply the speed methods compatible with each motor generation.

To see the method available for your motor, use the speed compatibility checker on the home page.

Depending on the motor, region can configure assistance up to 32 km/h or up to 45 km/h on compatible newer generations, while keeping the real speed display. The wheel method can allow higher values on some motors, but the speedometer and distance may no longer show real values.

Region changes the motor destination, for example USA region, and keeps the real speed display when available.

Wheel size or wheel circumference changes the speed calculation. It can allow higher assistance speed, but the displayed speed and distance may no longer match reality.

Yes. With compatible methods, eTuning lets you adjust the speed again. On some newer motors, the initial setup is done with eTuning for Windows and SM-PCE02, and then the speed can be adjusted from Android or iPhone.

It depends on the regulations of each country and place of use. In many countries, an e-bike that assists above 25 km/h cannot be used on public roads as a standard electric bicycle.

The user is responsible for using any configuration according to applicable law. eTuning does not authorize or recommend riding on public roads with configurations that are not permitted.

Connection, interface and replacement motors

To use Android or iPhone by Bluetooth, the bike needs a Shimano display or interface with compatible Bluetooth. Normally, most factory displays fitted on bikes have it, but some displays or interfaces do not include Bluetooth.

The settings are saved in the motor, not in the display. If your bike does not have a compatible Bluetooth connection, you need to use eTuning for Windows with a compatible physical interface, or temporarily install a Shimano display or interface with Bluetooth to configure the bike from Android or iPhone.

The Shimano SM-PCE02 interface is used with eTuning for Windows for configurations that require an interface connection, especially speed changes on newer Shimano STEPS families such as EP801, EP6/EP600 and EP5/EP500.

Yes. eTuning for Windows includes direct motor connection for working with an isolated motor, such as a replacement motor or a motor bought separately. See the full guide to Shimano STEPS direct motor connection.

In that mode, the motor must be physically disconnected from the battery and from all other components. Only the compatible interface should be connected to the motor.

Yes. eTuning can help review and configure parameters such as wheel circumference, gear type, number of gears, chainring, sprocket, mounting angle, lights and other compatible settings.

This is useful when a new motor comes with generic factory values and does not match the bike where it will be installed. For that case, read the guide on configuring a new or replacement Shimano STEPS motor.

App features

eTuning can modify compatible Shimano STEPS parameters such as maximum speed, region, wheel circumference, assistance, gear configuration, lights, mounting angle and other available settings.

To see the parameters available on your specific bike, connect the motor with the eTuning app. The app detects the system and shows the functions that motor can use. For speed, you can also use the compatibility checker.

Cloud backups let you save bike profiles and restore configurations from your devices. You can use them as a backup, as a preset, or to keep the original configuration before making changes.
